Congress president elections: Race for top post in GOP – and to possibly replace Sonia Gandhi – appears set to be between Shashi Tharoor and Ashok Gehlot

Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot emerged this week as a possible candidate for Congress president in next month’s election. If confirmed, the Gandhi family loyalist will join former union minister Shashi Tharoor – a prominent member of group of dissenting senior leaders who have questioned the Gandhis’ leadership – in the race to replace interim boss Sonia Gandhi and give the opposition outfit its first non-Gandhi leader in nearly 25 years.

Gehlot’s candidature, however, has yet to be confirmed and sources close to the veteran politician say his first choice remains Rahul Gandhi; the Rajasthan unit of the Congress on Saturday passed a resolution calling on him to return.

Gehlot visited Sonia Gandhi in Delhi a few weeks ago.

Tharoor’s candidature has been confirmed. A Lok Sabha MP from Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram, he met Sonia Gandhi in Delhi on Monday – shortly after endorsing a petition calling for reforms within the party – and was assured of ‘fair and transparent’ elections and confirmation anyone could file nominations.

A senior leader (on condition of anonymity) told Hindustan Times Sonia Gandhi ‘made it very clear that (a) genuine election will be held and anyone who wants can stand for president’.

Perhaps significantly, Sonia Gandhi also said there will be no party candidate.

Hindustan Times could not reach Tharoor for a comment and Gehlot ‘remains a loyal soldier of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi’, sources told news agency ANI.

The election has been scheduled for October 17, with results due two days later.

Tharoor’s path to the presidency, however, has been complicated by news Gehlot might also run; the Rajasthan chief minister is a staunch Gandhi loyalist and has frequently defended Rahul Gandhi and the family from criticism.

This includes that from within party ranks.

He is likely to be supported by those campaigning for Rahul Gandhi – who this week was coy on his possible return.

Rahul Gandhi is in Kerala leading the Congress’ ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ and, pushed on a second term, said, “…will become clear when elections take place”.

Filing of nominations for the election begins on September 22.

The elections will take place amid much controversy given that several senior leaders have walked out of the party over the past year – a period in which the party also lost multiple elections as critics issued repeated warnings.

Meanwhile, as the election date nears the calls for Rahul Gandhi to return grow louder. Over the past few days at least seven Congress state units – including Rajasthan and poll-bound Gujarat have passed resolutions to that effect.

The last non-Gandhi Congress chief was Sitaram Kesari. Sonia Gandhi took over in March 1998 and returned to the post after Rahul Gandhi quit in 2019.

‘Bring back British empire’: Anger after debate on UK news channel

British empire

James Morrow, political editor with the Daily Telegraph, and another British journalist and author – Rowan Dean – were on the panel.

The death of Queen Elizabeth II earlier this month led to an outpouring of grief worldwide. But the longest serving British monarch’s death also brought back memories of colonial rule for people in many nations. Now, a debate has got kicked off on social media after “the British empire” was praised by panelists on the United Kingdom-based Sky News network.

James Morrow, political editor with the Daily Telegraph, and another British journalist and author – Rowan Dean – were on the panel. “Decolonisation was a bigger disaster for most of the countries, which led to so much more bloodshed, violence, chaos that the empire itself did not cause,” Morrow is heard saying in a clip being widely shared now.

At this point, Rowan Dean interjects, and says: “I also want to talk about this. It drives me nuts that we educate people that the empire is bad. I am for it. Let’s start a new movement – ‘Bring back the British empire. Bring it back. You look at countries like Zimbabwe. You look at countries like Uganda… decolonised. As James says – disastrous.”

“You look at countries like India and Pakistan – they have struggled since the colonial era. It’s fine to say that there were bad things that happened. Of course there were bad things that happened, but look at the rule of law, the establishment. Look at the opposite that has happened since the British empire left,” he adds.

Calling the British empire “an era of civilisation”, Morrow stresses, “No other European empire created so many successful states.”

Anger is brewing on Internet over the comments. “This is vile: Murdoch’s commentators are calling for a return to British colonialism. They’re pushing to “bring back the British Empire”, saying countries like India would be better off under European rule,” read a post by Australians for a Murdoch Royal Commission, a non-profit.

“One of the most successful news channels in the UK is discussing this in ‘prime time’ debate: bring back the British Empire. Arguing de-colonisation brought disaster to Zimbabwe, Uganda, India, Pakistan…These people claim to have brought in civilisation,” tweeted Rajgopal, a journalist.

Another journalist, Smita Sharma, took a potshot at the panel: “Akhand British empire dream, (undivided British empire).”

The world paid final respects to the Queen as her final rites were performed on Monday.

3 held in MP shocker after girl, 16, gang-raped; house of accused razed

gang-raped

Rewa rape case: The incident happened near a temple in the outskirts of Rewa district in Madhya Pradesh. A search is on to nab the remaining three accused in the case, while the district administration has razed a building owned by the accused.

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly beaten up by four men and two minors, and gang-raped, leading to her hospitalisation, in a shocking incident that has emerged from Madhya Pradesh. The state police have so far held three of the six accused in the case and the district administration is carrying out a demolition of the ‘illegal’ buildings linked to them. The BJP-led governments have been resorting to the bulldozer move against those accused in crimes in many states.

The incident occurred on Saturday, under the limits of the Naigarhi police station area, about 70km from the Rewa district headquarters, additional superintendent of police (ASP) Anil Sonkar told news agency PTI. According to the PTI report, the victim had gone to a temple with a male friend Saturday afternoon. The duo was chatting when the six accused – including the two minors – arrived at the spot, Sonkar said. They picked her up, dragged the girl in front of her friend and took her to a spot near a water body.

The complainant told the police that the girl and her friend begged to spare them but the accused did not relent. “After raping the girl, they thrashed her and took away her mobile phone and anklet,” Sonkar said, adding that they also threatened her before fleeing the scene. “Three accused have been arrested while a hunt is on to trace others,” the police officer said. The girl was rushed to a hospital as her health deteriorated.

Meanwhile, a video was shared by ANI showing a demolition drive taken out by the district administration to raze an “illegal” house of the three accused. The police said the same treatment would be meted out to the three others who were involved in the crime.

‘Will affect ties between 2 states’: Bommai on controversial Telangana billboard

Bommai

Bommai called the move a systematic conspiracy and said that it might damage the relation between the two states.

Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai has responded to the controversial billboards that cropped up in Telangana’s Hyderabad ahead of his scheduled visit to the city. Bommai called the move a systematic conspiracy and said that it might damage the relation between the two states.

Speaking to the reporters on Sunday, Bommai said: “I was supposed to be in Hyderabad but had to cancel my plans due to busy schedule. I have heard about the billboards that appeared in Hyderabad and it is a systematic conspiracy. I do not know whether they are private billboards or government sponsored ones.”

“But it is not fair for the Telangana government to allow such baseless allegations against a chief minister on a billboard. This might daunt the relations between two friendly states.”

Over the weekend, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held the Hyderabad Liberation Day event celebrations at Parade Grounds in Secunderabad, and many BJP leaders including union home minister Amit Shah and Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai were scheduled to attend. Hours before the event, posters reading – “Welcome 40% CM” – cropped up near the venue in apparent potshot at Bommai.

However, chief minister Bommai did not attend the event on Saturday.

The Karnataka BJP has been defined as “40% government” by opposition parties after many contractors in the state made an allegation of giving “40 per cent of contract amount as bribe to BJP leaders and officials who are in power, for all state sponsored infrastructural works in the state”. The ruling BJP had condemned these allegations many times.

‘Start respecting local languages’: KTR tags IndiGo for a ‘win-win solution’

IndiGo

An incident at an IndiGo flight was shared in a Twitter thread, which prompted a response from Telangana minister KT Rama Rao.

Telangana minister KT Rama Rao on Sunday responded to a thread on Twitter about an incident that was reported on an IndiGo flight. In the thread, a concern was raised by a user on staff at a flight from Andhra Pradesh’s Vijaywada to Telangana’s Hyderabad not knowing Telugu.

In her tweet, Devasmita Chakraverty, whose Twitter bio says she is an assistant professor at IIM Ahmedabad, said a woman was shifted from the front row of the plane to the second row because she did not know Hindi or English. “The attendant said it’s a security issue,” the post read. “Flight from AP to Telangana has no instructions in Telugu. The attendant said it’s a safety issue that she doesn’t understand English/Hindi. If unhappy, we (not she) should complain. No dignity, non-Hindi treated as second class citizens in their own state,” Chakraverty further wrote.

Stressing that international airlines like Emirates do provide instructions in Bangla on Kolkata flight, she further insisted that Indian flights should follow suit. “Technology can solve this problem, but not when the intent is lacking,” she pointed out. Responding to the concerns, KT Rama Rao wrote: “Dear @IndiGo6E Management, I request you to start respecting local languages & passengers who may not be well conversant in English or Hindi.”

“In regional routes, recruit more staff who can speak the local language like Telugu, Tamil, Kannada etc. This will be a win-win solution,” he added.

Apart from Telangana minister KT Rama Rao, the user also tagged civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia: “I am looking up to you to resolve this at a systemic level. As policy, safety instructions should be available in all language & used as per need, not just in English/Hindi. It’s a matter of safety, dignity, & treating everyone equally. Hope you’ll do the right thing. (sic)”

President Biden vows to defend Taiwan, shatters Xi’s unification dream

President Biden

US President Joe Biden’s emphatic words on Taiwan indicate that America is as much focused on China as it is on Russia in the context of the ongoing Ukraine war.

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s dream of unifying the breakaway Republic Taiwan with the mainland may turn into a nightmare with President Joe Biden saying that US troops would defend Taipei in case of an “unprecedented attack” by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Despite clarification by the White House post Biden statement, this is the fourth time that the US President and Chief Executive has openly said that America would defend Taiwan. White House, as in the past, added that there was no change in US policy towards Taiwan post statement.

In his most explicit statement, President Joe Biden in an interview with CBS’s 60 minutes, aired on Sunday, said ‘yes’ to US forces defending the island republic if there was an unprecedented attack by the Chinese Army.

Despite the convulsions with the US State Department over his statement, President Joe Biden’s emphatic words provide much-needed succor to Taiwan, Japan and some Southeast Asian countries who are at the receiving end of Beijing’s wolf warrior diplomacy and military belligerence of the PLA in the Indo-Pacific. The PLA has also been involved in a 28-month military stand-off with the Indian Army in the East Ladakh sector after Beijing decided to unilaterally change the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in East Ladakh sector beefing up its military positions all along the 3488 km line.

President Biden’s statement clearly indicates that America is as much focused on China in the context of Taiwan as it is on Russia in the context of the ongoing Ukraine war. But the fundamental difference is that while in Ukraine, the US is supplying billions of dollars worth of weapons to Kyviv to defend itself from the Red Army invasion, the US President in case of Taiwan is willing to commit American troops on the ground to defend against the PLA. This means that US military presence in the Indo-Pacific will grow to deter any Chinese aggression against Taiwan or Japan.

President Biden’s unequivocal statement will add more strength to the QUAD grouping as all the four partners face either military or diplomatic or trade friction with China. Given the proximity of Japanese territory to Taiwan, any military emergency on Taipei will drag Tokyo into the conflict and this was reflected in Chinese missiles landing in the Japanese EEZ post visit of Nancy Pelosi to the island republic.

The continued pressure from President Biden will also refrain China from opening fronts with other democratic countries and deter newfound supporters of Beijing in the Indian sub-continent and within the Asean.

‘He spoke because…’: Kamran Akmal lambasts PCB over Shahid Afridi’s shocking claim on Shaheen Afridi’s rehab

Afridi's rehab

Pakistani batter Kamran Akmal has lashed out at Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after Shahid Afridi’s revelation about Shaheen Afridi sparked a massive debate in Pakistan cricket.

Pakistani batter Kamran Akmal came out in Shahid Afridi’s support after his former teammate slammed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and made a shocking revelation about Shaheen Afridi’s rehabilitation. Pace ace Shaheen had missed the entire edition of the Asia Cup due to a knee injury that he sustained during the Sri Lanka series. Making headlines with his sensational claim, Afridi alleged that Shaheen flew out to the United Kingdom (UK) for surgery at his own expense.

A day after Afridi’s big revelation sparked a massive debate in Pakistan cricket, the Ramiz Raja-led Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued an official statement about Shaheen’s treatment. Launching an attack on the apex cricket board of Pakistan on Saturday, Afridi’s former teammate Akmal urged PCB chairperson Raja to sack those who are responsible for the Shaheen fiasco. Sharing his views on his YouTube channel, Akmal defended Afridi and claimed that the medical team of PCB wasted Shaheen’s time by forcing the pacer to travel with the Babar Azam-led side

The PCB chairman must sack the guys responsible for the Shaheen Afridi fiasco. Did Ramiz Raja ask if Afridi’s treatment was happening under the PCB’s supervision? What about the travel and accommodation expenses? Shahid Afridi would never have made such a statement if PCB had paid for all the expenses. He spoke because PCB hasn’t done anything. The medical team initially wasted 35-40 days by making him travel with the team,” Akmal said.

On Thursday, the PCB named pacer Shaheen in Pakistan’s star-studded squad for the 2022 edition of the World Cup. However, speed merchant Shaheen will miss the seven-match T20I series between hosts Pakistan and England. Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Pakistani chief selector Mohammad Wasim assured that the PCB is assessing Shaheen’s injury.

“Shaheen was forced to go to London as PCB’s medical team didn’t provide him any proper treatment. He did the right thing by departing for London instead of wasting more time. If he had made this decision a bit earlier, he would have been playing the home series against England,” said Akmal who played 58 T20Is for Pakistan.

Akmal observed that Afridi was allowed to resume his training just two days after the star pacer arrived in London. Talking more about the ‘incompetent’ medical staff of the PCB, Akmal opined that the cricket board is doing damage control by sending Fakhar Zaman to London for his rehabilitation.

Just two days after reaching London, he was able to resume his training. Whereas, the PCB medical team made him tape his knee when he was at the ICC Academy. This shows how incompetent the medical staff is. The board says they have arranged the doctors, but Shahid Afridi has said that it was he who made the arrangements. The PCB is just trying to do damage control by sending Fakhar Zaman to London for his rehab,” he added.

China’s default position on Pak terror is block India

Pak terror

Blocking India’s proposal at UNSC to designate Pak-based terrorists as global terrorist is a low-cost option for China to appease its client state rather than allow it to renegotiate the power projects with Chinese companies as part of mandatory condition for a much-needed IMF loan by Islamabad.

The blocking of the US-India joint proposal before the UNSC 1267 committee to designate 26/11 killer Sajid Mir as a global terrorist by China indicates that when it comes to Pakistan-based terrorists targeting India, obstruction is the default position of Beijing without going into the merits or demerits of the submission. Mir was part of the Pakistani ISI-conceived Karachi Project, whose demon child Indian Mujahideen terror group killed nearly 1,000 innocent Indians from 2005 to 2011 through IED blasts.

On the instructions of Beijing, the Chinese representative in the UN put the Mir proposal on hold after the designation of two more Pakistani terrorists—Lashkar-e-Toiba’s financier Abdul Rehman Makki and Jaish-e-Mohammed operational commander Mufti Rauf Azhar—were put on technical hold at the UNSC by Xi Jinping regime.

This means that the pending proposal of France-India joint proposal to designate Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed killers Mohiuddin Alamgir and Ali Kashif Jan as global terrorists by the 1267 committee will also be blocked by China soon. By doing this, the Xi Jinping regime is sending a message to India that terrorism is your problem and hence you sort it out. It is also a low-cost option for China to appease its client state Pakistan rather than allow it to renegotiate the power projects with Chinese companies as part of mandatory condition for a much-needed IMF loan by Islamabad. Pakistan is deep under debt due to gold plated power projects set up with the help of Chinese companies on high interest loans and high cost of electricity.

Although China may feel that it is a low-cost option, the Narendra Modi government takes terrorism very seriously and such actions from Beijing will further add bitterness to already a sour bilateral relationship. The hold on Makki, Azhar and Mir will also complicate China’s relationship with US and France as Mir was training French jihadists in early 2000 and was responsible for killing US nationals in the 26/11 attack.

It is understood that China’s “no limits” friend Russia is no longer a safe bet for India to become a co-sponsor for designation by the 1267 committee. Britain, which still thinks is the last word on the Af-Pak region, has also been dilly-dallying on these proposals given its close relationship with Rawalpindi
