Despite inflationary pressure, the overall festive mood remains unaffected. Crowds gathered at jewellery stores and malls across Maharashtra early in the morning, taking advantage of special Dhanteras offers. Leading jewellery brands and online platforms are providing up to 10% discounts on making charges, along with zero-interest EMI and gold exchange benefits.

Sanjay Mehta, a gold trader from Zaveri Bazaar, shared, “Every year, Dhanteras brings positivity and enthusiasm. Even though prices are at historic highs, people don’t wish to miss the auspicious timing. The trend of digital and online gold booking has picked up rapidly since the pandemic, and customers now prefer flexibility along with tradition.”

Through trusted fintech platforms such as Paytm, Google Pay, and PhonePe, users can now buy as little as ₹10 worth of gold instantly. In addition, sovereign gold bonds (SGBs) continue to attract long-term investors, offering both safety and interest income. Financial advisors suggest that digital and paper gold options reduce risks associated with physical storage while allowing easy liquidity.

Market experts predict that gold prices may remain firm in the coming weeks due to ongoing geopolitical tensions and global economic uncertainty. However, a major correction is unlikely unless there is a significant change in international interest rates or inflation trends.

As per the RBI’s official bank holiday calendar, banks are closed on all Sundays, as well as the second and fourth Saturdays each month. The first, third, and fifth Saturdays are regular working days for both public and private sector banks. Hence, October 18 being the third Saturday, banking services are functioning as usual in all Indian states and union territories, except for branches in Assam where a regional holiday is being observed.

In Assam, bank branches have declared a full closure on account of Kati Bihu, also known as Kongali Bihu, one of the three major Bihu festivals in the state. This celebration signifies the start of a new agricultural cycle, during which lamps are lit in fields as a prayer for good harvests. Therefore, customers in cities including Guwahati and Tinsukia may experience unavailability of over-the-counter services today.

Bank are closed in ASSAM but people use online transaction

While physical branches remain closed in parts of Assam, all digital banking channels — including mobile apps, internet banking, ATMs, and UPI payments — continue to function normally. Customers can perform fund transfers, pay bills, or check balances online without any interruptions.

The Reserve Bank of India ensures that core financial services remain available through these digital platforms, minimizing customer inconvenience during regional or festival-specific holidays. People planning any offline transactions in the coming days are advised to schedule them according to their local holiday calendar.

The move aims to prevent mishaps and safeguard public spaces during one of Maharashtra’s most vibrant festivals.

According to city officials, teams from the NMC Fire Department have begun inspecting temporary stalls in major markets such as Itwari, Sitabuldi, Dharampeth, Mominpura, and other key commercial zones. Every year, the days leading up to Diwali witness a surge in the production and sale of sweets, dry fruits, snacks, and packaged food items. However, the growing consumer demand often encourages some traders to compromise on food quality, leading to adulteration that can pose serious health risks.

This year, the FDA Nagpur division launched an extensive inspection campaign across the city and nearby regions. Teams of officers visited sweet shops, dairy units, snack manufacturers, and wholesale godowns to check the quality and hygiene of food products being sold or distributed ahead of the festive rush.
