Following the roll-out at Delhi International Airport in June, CIAL has begun an infrastructure makeover at the immigration area, dedicating 8 lanes to biometric e-gates, enabling international travelers to complete the immigration process by themselves in 20 seconds. This state-of-the-art facility will be launched by August 2024.
The MHA’s Fast Track Immigration- Trusted Traveler’s (FTI-TTP) programmer aims to expedite the immigration clearance for eligible Indian Nationals and Foreign Nationals holding OCI cards. Applicants must complete a one-time registration process, on the MHA portal, upload necessary documents, and enroll biometrics (fingerprint and face image) at the Foreigner’s Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or help desks set up in the immigration area. Upon successful validation through mobile OTP, travelers can use the smart gates, bypassing long queues at the departure/arrival immigration counters by self-scanning their passports and using the face recognition system. This eliminates the need for human interaction or fact-checking during immigration.
The Bureau of Immigration at Cochin International Airport has already established an enrollment facility at the FRRO office within Kochi Airport premises and help desks at the immigration area.

Following the announcement of Budget 2024-25, the middle class is eager to understand how it will impact them. The main question is where the Budget places India’s middle class. This depends on three main factors: your income level, the tax system you have chosen, and the details of your investments.
Under the new tax regime, individuals with an income of Rs 7.75 lakh per year can now have their tax liability reduced to zero due to the increase in the standard deduction amount and changes in tax slab. For instance, there is no tax on income up to Rs 3 lakh, and a 5% tax rate applies to income between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 7 lakh. With a rebate of Rs 25,000 under Section 87A and a standard deduction of Rs 75,000, individuals can be exempt from taxes up to an income of Rs 7.75 lakh.
Despite these changes, the old tax regime has not been altered in Budget 2024. Opting for the old regime is favorable for those benefiting from deductions like HRA, LTA, 80C, and 80D.
The treatment of capital gains has also been adjusted, with short-term gains from equities now taxed at 20% instead of 15%. This means that a profit of Rs 2 lakh from equity trading within a year will result in a tax liability of Rs 40,000. Additionally, selling property held for more than two years may lead to losses as inflation adjustment benefits have been discontinued, even though the tax rate on gains has decreased from 20% to 12.5%.

Following Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget 2024, where she introduced more incentives to encourage tax-payers to move to the new, simplified tax regime, it is clear that only individuals who have significantly higher deductions will still prefer the old tax system.
The income tax slabs have been expanded in the simplified regime, and the standard deduction has been increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000. The general recommendation is for salaried workers to opt for the new tax system, unless they are benefiting from deductions such as up to Rs 2 lakh on home loan interest or qualify for substantial house rent allowance.
