Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi hailed wrestler Vinesh Phogat as his “hero” after she made history by reaching the finals of the women’s 50 kg wrestling event at the Paris Olympics, becoming the first Indian to achieve this feat.
Gogoi praised Phogat for her outstanding performance in defeating Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba in the semifinals and securing at least a silver medal in her third Olympic appearance. Admiring her determination, self-belief, and strength, he extended his best wishes for her to win the gold medal at the Olympics.
In a post on X, Gogoi expressed his admiration for Phogat, describing her as a symbol of courage and resilience. He urged her to stay focused and strive for the Olympic gold medal, not only for herself but also for Indian women and the entire nation.
Phogat’s remarkable achievement received recognition from Tokyo Games bronze medallist wrestler Bajrang Punia, who referred to her as the “lioness of India” for her impressive victories in Paris. Both athletes had previously led a protest against alleged sexual harassment of women wrestlers by a former Wrestling Federation of India chief.
