According to a report, Russia is utilizing numerous SpaceX Starlink terminals in Ukraine

The head of Ukrainian military intelligence has revealed that Russian troops have been utilizing the Starlink system for an extended period. 

These troops obtained the communication terminals from private Russian companies that had acquired them through intermediaries.

According to the Ukrainian military intelligence chief, Russian troops in Ukraine have been utilizing numerous Starlink satellite communications terminals provided by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The terminals were obtained by the Russians through private Russian firms who purchased them from intermediaries. 

Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov stated that these intermediaries transport the equipment to Russia via nearby countries, including former Soviet Republics. While it was previously disclosed that Russian troops were using Starlink on the front lines, the exact extent of their usage was not revealed.

 On the other hand, Ukraine heavily relies on Starlink and stated last year that around 42,000 terminals were being used by the military, hospitals, businesses, and aid organizations. The Pentagon has been assisting in funding the access to Starlink for Ukrainian forces.

The Russian Embassy and SpaceX have not provided immediate responses to comment requests.

 Starlink has stated that it does not engage in any business with Russia, but the company has not replied to an email regarding the possibility of its system being used by Russian troops in Ukraine. 

According to retired British Army Brigadier Ben Barry, if Russian forces are indeed utilizing Starlink, their communications would be more secure and difficult for Ukraine and its allies to decipher.

A recent report from auditors suggests that the Kaleshwaram Project in Telangana is not financially viable

The legislative assembly has received the CAG report on the performance audit of the previous BRS government’s flagship project.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has released a scathing report on Telangana’s Kaleshwaram project, stating that it was not financially feasible from the start and highlighting significant cost overruns, potential undue advantages for contractors, and inadequate planning. 

The CAG report suggests that the cost of the Kaleshwaram Project, which was initially estimated at Rs 81,911 crore according to the Central Water Commission (CWC), is now expected to exceed Rs 1.47 lakh crore. 

This report was presented in the legislative assembly, shedding light on the performance audit of the previous BRS government’s flagship project. The controversial Kaleshwaram project has faced further scrutiny after some piers of the Medigadda barrage “sank” last year.

The Medigadda barrage was found to be severely damaged by the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA), making it non-functional unless it undergoes extensive renovations.

 This damage is believed to be one of the main factors contributing to the defeat of BRS in the recent assembly elections. The Kaleshwaram Project is an offshoot of the PCSS Project, which was originally formulated by the former undivided state of Andhra Pradesh. 

The executive summary of the CAG report highlights that the Telangana government has not provided administrative approval for the entire project, instead issuing separate approvals totaling to 73, with a combined cost of Rs 1,10,248.48 crore. Additionally, there is no clarity about the funding pattern for the project, as there are no government orders in this regard. 

As of March 2022, out of the total expenditure of Rs 86,788.06 crore on the project, Rs 55,807.86 crore (64.3 percent) was financed through off-budget borrowings raised by KIPCL.

The proposal for the DPR included the extraction of water from river Godavari at a rate of two TMC per day. However, the pumping capacity was later increased to three TMC per day, which incurred an additional cost of Rs 28,151 crore.

 As a result of re-engineering the PCSS Project and making changes to the project works, certain parts of the already executed works became unnecessary, leading to a loss of Rs 767.78 crore. 

As of March 2022, only 12 out of the 56 project works were completed, 40 were ongoing, and four had not even begun. Furthermore, the report stated that the identification of lands required for the distributary network and other purposes is still incomplete.

Japan, currently the world’s third largest economy, has fallen into a recession

Japan unexpectedly fell into a recession at the end of last year, which has raised concerns about the country’s monetary policy and its position as the world’s third-largest economy.

The Bank of Japan has been preparing to end negative rates, but is expected to proceed cautiously amid ongoing risks.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) will be holding a unique live trading session on March 2, a Saturday. 

This session is being carried out to assess how well-prepared the NSE is for unexpected disasters. It is part of the Business Continuity Plan (BCP) and Disaster Recovery Site (DRS) framework for stock exchanges and depositories.

This means that March 2 will not be a holiday for the stock market. The session will involve switching from the primary site to the disaster recovery site, and it will be divided into two parts.

The first part will take place from 9:15 am to 10 am on the primary NSE website, while the second part will occur from 11:30 am on the disaster recovery site. 

Future contracts will have a 5% operating range, and securities in the Future and Options (F&O) segment will have a price band of 5% for both upper and lower limits. 

The special session is in line with SEBI guidelines, which require testing disaster services preparedness. The last special session took place on January 20 due to the Ayodhya Ram Mandir ceremony.
