Indie Dog, Lost In Crowd, Makes A 250-Km Journey Back Home

Yamagarni village in Nipani taluk of Belagavi district recently witnessed a strange sight. A jubilant crowd paraded a black indie dog covered in garlands and held a feast in its honour. For the villagers, the return of the dog, which had been lost, is a miracle.

Fondly called Maharaj, the animal which is well past its prime, was lost in the crowd in the town of Pandharpur in South Maharashtra, but made its way back to the village in Belagavi in North Karnataka, travelling nearly 250km on its own.

In the last week of June, Maharaj had followed its owner Kamalesh Kumbhar when he went on his Wari padayatra’ trip to Pandharpur.

Kumbhar, a Warkari’, said he Pandharpur every year on Ashadha Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi.

This time, the dog too accompanied him, he said.

“Maharaj has always liked listening to bhajans. Once, he had accompanied me on another padayatra trip to Jyotiba temple near Mahabaleshwar,” Kumbhar told PTI. For nearly 250 km, the dog followed the master, who walked with a group of his friends, chanting bhajans.

After the at Vithoba temple, Kumbhar said he noticed that the dog was missing. When he went looking for him, he said people over there told him that the dog had left with another group.

“I still searched for him everywhere and I could not find him. So, I thought maybe the people were right, that he left with someone else. I returned to my home town on 14,” Kumbhar said.

The very next day though, Kumbhar said, to his surprise “Maharaj was standing there in front of my house, wagging his tail as if nothing had happened. He looked well fed and perfectly fine.”

Overcome with happiness, Kumbhar said, he and the villagers celebrated Maharaj’s return with a feast. “It is such a miracle that the dog could find its way, although it was 250 km or so away from home. We think it was Lord Panduranga who guided him.”

The Indian Army intervenes to aid residents affected by severe flooding in Pune caused by heavy rainfall

Intense rainfall has caused widespread chaos in the city, resulting in waterlogging, flooding, and landslides, with no signs of the rain easing up in the coming days.

Underground passages were flooded, and transportation services like buses, flights, and trains faced delays due to continuous rain from the overcast skies.

Numerous residential areas in low-lying regions such as Sinhagad Road, Bavdhan, Baner, and Deccan Gymkhana experienced severe flooding.

Efforts are underway by the fire brigade and disaster management team of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to rescue those stranded by the floods, according to officials cited by PTI.

Despite no current flooding in Sinhagad Road and successful evacuation of those in need, authorities have ensured provision of meals, clothes, and other necessities for the rescued individuals.

As the situation deteriorated, the government enlisted the help of the Indian Army, which swiftly initiated rescue operations. The Southern Command of the Indian Army also utilized X to broadcast visuals of their efforts.

CIAL to launch smart gates for international travelers, Self-immigration process in 20 seconds

CIAL

Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is set to become the second airport in India to implement the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)’s prestigious Trusted Traveller Programme, facilitating a seamless immigration process through self-authentication at specially designed smart gates at immigration counters. Following the roll-out at Delhi International Airport in June, CIAL has begun an infrastructure makeover at the immigration area, dedicating 8 lanes to biometric e-gates, enabling international travelers to complete the immigration process by themselves in 20 seconds. This state-of-the-art facility will be launched by August 2024.

The MHA’s Fast Track Immigration- Trusted Traveler’s (FTI-TTP) programmer aims to expedite the immigration clearance for eligible Indian Nationals and Foreign Nationals holding OCI cards. Applicants must complete a one-time registration process, on the MHA portal, upload necessary documents, and enroll biometrics (fingerprint and face image) at the Foreigner’s Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or help desks set up in the immigration area. Upon successful validation through mobile OTP, travelers can use the smart gates, bypassing long queues at the departure/arrival immigration counters by self-scanning their passports and using the face recognition system. This eliminates the need for human interaction or fact-checking during immigration.

The Bureau of Immigration at Cochin International Airport has already established an enrollment facility at the FRRO office within Kochi Airport premises and help desks at the immigration area.

CIAL Managing Director S. Suhas IAS stated, “Implementing FTI-TTP at CIAL’s emigration counter will ensure a fast, safe, and seamless process. CIAL is proud to collaborate with the Bureau of Immigration to facilitate fast-track biometric smart travel at our immigration counters. We understand the importance of a smooth, hassle-free travel experience and leverage cutting-edge technology at every passenger touchpoint. The biometric authentication process will reduce the immigration verification process time from 4 minutes to just 20 seconds.”

CIAL, the fourth busiest airport in India for international passenger traffic, handles 10 million passengers and 70,200 air traffic movements annually. The airport has recently implemented the Digiyatra facility, developed by its in-house IT team, and has planned several modernization projects, including the Perimeter Intrusion Detection System, to be commissioned next month. The fast-track immigration gates will be deployed this week, with testing starting on Monday, followed by the official launch by August 2024.
