Unfortunate Update for Sunita Williams: NASA Requires an Additional 5 Months for the Return of Astronauts

Astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore are currently stuck on the International Space Station due to thruster malfunctions and helium leaks in Boeing’s Starliner capsule. Their mission, which was originally intended to last a week, has now been prolonged to over eight months.

NASA has announced plans to return them using a SpaceX spacecraft in February, while the Starliner will autonomously make its way back to Earth in September. The agency stated on Saturday that Williams and Wilmore will need to wait an additional five months to return home, citing safety concerns regarding Boeing’s problematic new capsule. Since early June, the astronauts have been at the International Space Station as engineers work on tests and assess the safest options for their return.
