The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday refused to grant interim relief to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case filed against him by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The court has reserved its verdict on his plea seeking a stay on the sentence awarded in the 2019 case. Rahul Gandhi had challenged the conviction in the 2019 case in the High Court. On Tuesday, the court refused to give any interim relief to Rahul Gandhi in this case.

May 5 is the last working day of the High Court. After this, due to summer holidays, the court will open on June 5 next month. In such a situation, a decision will be taken in June itself.

In fact, on April 27, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi presented his arguments in the court on behalf of Rahul. Abhishek Manu Singhvi had said that Rahul Gandhi did not commit murder. If the conviction is not stayed, they will not be able to contest elections for 8 years. Even a week is a long time in politics, in eight years, the petitioner’s political career can end.

On March 23, a Surat sessions court sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years in jail under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code( IPC). However, he was immediately granted bail by the court. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had appealed to the court to stay the sentence, which the court refused. After this, Rahul approached the Gujarat High Court.
