Khandwa.
At around 9 am on Sunday morning, there was a stir among the people bathing there due to a sudden rise in the water level of Narmada near Nagar Ghat in Omkareshwar district. The water level of Narmada started rising after NHDC started introducing turbines for power generation. Seeing the water rising, people ran towards the ghat, during which 10 to 12 youths bathing in the middle of the river stood on the rock instead of coming out. After this, when the water level of Narmada increased rapidly, they got stuck there.
As soon as the information was received, Mandhata Police Station In-charge Baljit Singh Bisen and Tahsildar Uday Mandloi rescued the youth trapped on the rock by home guards and sailors.
Among the youths trapped in the water, six youths are said to be from Maharashtra and five youths from Indore. All have been safely evacuated.
Due to the sudden rise in the water level of Narmada, there was noise and chaos. The youths were trapped on the rock for about 20 minutes.
Mandhata police station in-charge Baljit Singh Bisen said that nhdc releases water by running turbines for power generation every day. This increases the water level of Narmada to a certain extent. Sirens were sounded before the turbine started, but the youths did not pay attention. All the youths trapped on the rock under Nagar Ghat have been rescued with the help of sailors and rescued safely. No one has filed any complaint.
Collector Anup Kumar Singh said that as usual, three to four turbines were started by NHDC for power generation in the morning. People asked those bathing in Narmada to come out of the water, but some youth did not agree. Home Guard personnel and sailors present at the pier pulled them out of the water. Collector Singh said that the level gradually increases when water is released from the turbine. There is no such thing as a sudden rise in water.
