An avalanche hit Gangtok, the capital of the northeastern state of Sikkim, on Tuesday, in which six tourists died while 150 people were still reported trapped in the snow. The dead include four men, a woman and a child. The incident took place around 12 noon on the Jawaharlal Nehru Road connecting Gangtok to Nathu La Pass.

On receiving information about the accident, the Border Road Organization immediately started a rescue operation and rescued 22 people, 6 of whom were evacuated from the deep valley.
