Fake news, misinformation, political ambitions and preferences, tendency to act as power brokers and financial considerations have eroded people’s trust in the media, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar said on Thursday.

Reducing fake news

“The Press Council of India must take timely action against those who deliberately spread fake news and harm the ethics of the profession. This is not the time to show teeth but bite,” he said at a function held on the occasion of National Press Day. “The media is not a center of power or a player in realpolitik,” Mr. Dhanker said.

The fact is that he does everything in his power to be the center of power – not just a stakeholder, he seems to control it, he seems to direct it. “It is painful that some journalists themselves decide to change the democratic process, contrary to real feelings.”

Immigration and Travel Minister Anurag Thakur said he hoped the media would play an increasingly constructive role in highlighting not only India’s story of transformation but also the hopes and aspirations of its people.
