GeM acts as a complete online marketplace for Central, State Government bodies including PSUs.

The government has appointed IT sector giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as a strategic partner to revamp the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).  TCS gave this information.  The government’s objective behind this is to transform GeM into a state-of-the-art public procurement platform.  Along with this, there is also an emphasis on promoting transparency, efficiency and inclusiveness.

Currently, GeM boasts of a gross merchandise value (GMV) of over Rs 2 lakh crore, facilitating transactions between over 70,000 buyer organizations and over 65 lakh sellers and service providers.  These include 8,00,000 medium and small enterprises.

Will get benefit of TCS experience

GeM acts as an end-to-end online marketplace for Central and State government bodies including Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).  It streamlines the purchase of goods and services of common use.

Although the current GeM platform has seen success, there are still some architectural challenges that need to be resolved.  The partnership with TCS aims to overcome these challenges and meet the growing needs of both buyers and sellers.

On the partnership with TCS, GeM CEO PK Singh said, ‘In its next avatar, GeM is envisioned to be an all-inclusive platform for government procurement, making business easy and transparent.’  Said that the government is looking forward to the expertise of TCS in managing the mission mode programmes.

TCS has worked on mission-mode programs before

Tej Paul Bhatla, Business Head, Public Services-India, TCS, said, “The new GeM platform will transform public procurement with improved user experience, better transparency and greater inclusivity.”

The Public Services India business unit of TCS provides services to the central and state governments.  Over the last two decades, it has piloted several national mission-mode programmes.  These include passport issuance, health insurance, financial inclusion, investor facilitation and pension administration.
