Arshad Nadeem’s remarkable gold medal win at the Paris Olympics 2024 in the javelin throw final has secured his place in sporting history. He set a new Olympic Games record with a throw of 92.97m, breaking the record twice during the competition. 

Nadeem’s stunning performance not only earned him the gold medal but also ended Pakistan’s 32-year individual Olympic medal drought and helped the country secure the 62nd position in the Olympics.

As a result of his incredible achievement, Arshad Nadeem is set to receive numerous rewards, gifts, and cash prizes. This includes a prize money of USD 50,000 from World Athletics for winning gold, as well as a substantial prize of PKR 150 million from the Pakistani government. 

Additionally, various officials and organisations are offering cash prizes, with amounts ranging from PKR 1 million to PKR 100 million. Nadeem is also in line to receive prestigious awards such as the Hilal-i-Imtiaz and valuable gifts like a new car and a solar energy system. Government data shows that retail inflation in India dropped to 3.54% in July, the lowest it has been in five years

Government data revealed that India’s retail inflation dropped to 3.54% year-on-year in July, marking the first time in nearly five years that it has fallen below the Reserve Bank’s targeted 4%. In June 2024, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) based retail inflation was 5.08%, while in July 2023 it stood at 7.44%.

The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation highlighted that the Year-on-year inflation rate based on the All India Consumer Price Index for July 2024 is the lowest in 59 months. Inflation rates for rural and urban areas were recorded at 4.10% and 2.98% respectively.

Moreover, the data also indicated that food inflation in July 2024 is at its lowest since June 2023. The Year-on-year inflation rate based on the All India Consumer Food Price Index for the same period was 5.42%, with corresponding rates for rural and urban areas at 5.89% and 4.63% respectively.

In July 2024, inflation declined across all groups, with notable decreases in the prices of vegetables, fruits, and spices. The Ministry collected price data from various markets and villages across all states and union territories with a high level of coverage.

The ministry explained that price data were gathered from 100% of villages and 98.5% of urban locations, with market-wise prices being reported for 88.71% of rural areas and 92.64% of urban areas during July 2024.

Since taking office, Modi has equaled Nehru’s record and is on track to become the third Prime Minister, following Nehru and Indira Gandhi, to deliver eleven consecutive speeches from the Red Fort.

 Nehru had given 17 consecutive speeches, while Indira Gandhi had addressed the nation 16 times, including 11 in a row. 

Modi’s first Independence Day speech from the Red Fort was in 2014. As part of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign by the Bharatiya Janata Party, citizens are encouraged to hoist the national flag at their homes, shops, and offices, alongside a cleanliness drive. The initiative is part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, aiming to promote patriotism and awareness about the Indian National Flag.

After 61 years, the rare Great Four-Ring Butterfly has finally made a comeback to India

After 61 years without any sightings in India, the rare great four-ring butterfly was rediscovered in 2018. A team of researchers in Arunachal Pradesh spotted the butterfly near the Myanmar border, marking its first documented appearance since 1957. The butterfly, known scientifically as Ypthima cantliei, belongs to a genus with over 100 species and had not been seen in over six decades. 

Arunachal Pradesh has proven to be a haven for butterfly biodiversity, with 23 Ypthima species recorded in the region. The last known sighting of the great four-ring butterfly was in Margherita, Assam, in 1957. This recent rediscovery sheds light on the current status and distribution of this elusive species.
