After Rahul Dravid’s contract as head coach of the Indian cricket team expired following their T20 World Cup 2024 win, Gautam Gambhir was appointed as the new head coach. Gambhir began his tenure with a tour to Sri Lanka, where India played three T20Is and is currently involved in a three-match ODI series.

Gambhir’s strict attitude has often been criticised, with some labelling him as arrogant. However, his childhood coach, Sanjay Bhardwaj, revealed his true nature during an interaction with former India U-19 World Cup winner Manjot Kalra on Kalra’s YouTube channel.

Bhardwaj described Gambhir as an innocent 12-year-old, emphasizing that while people might perceive him as arrogant, it is merely his winning mentality. He recalled making Gambhir play matches after net sessions, where Gambhir would cry if he lost, showing his intense dislike for losing even at a young age.

Bhardwaj, who has known Gambhir for 30 years, asserted that Gambhir is pure at heart and has helped many young players, including pacer Navdeep Saini, advance in their careers. He described Gambhir as polite and sincere, despite the misconceptions about his attitude.

Gambhir’s coaching stint started well, with India securing a 3-0 whitewash in the T20I series against Sri Lanka under the new captain Suryakumar Yadav. However, the ODI series has been challenging, with India trailing 0-1 and one match remaining, marking the first time in 27 years that India might not win an ODI series against Sri Lanka.
