To combat global illiteracy, Media Monks and the World Literacy Foundation have introduced the Literacy Pen, an innovative gadget powered by Al technology that aids in reading and writing. It is expected to be launched in 2025 and could potentially help millions struggling with literacy. The device is a small, white cuboid with a digital display and microphone, designed to be attached to a standard pen or pencil for ease of use. By speaking a word, users can have it transcribed letter by letter onto the display, enabling them to practise writing it on paper.

Unlike smartphone apps, the clip-on design of the Literacy Pen offers a more practical and hands-on approach for daily usage. While the specific AI involvement in its functionality is not fully disclosed, the device utilises detection technology to transcribe spoken words.

Though its effectiveness in different languages remains unclear, the Literacy Pen is poised to have a substantial impact on improving literacy, as emphasised by World Literacy Foundation CEO, Andrew Kay. He believes this innovative solution can greatly assist illiterate individuals in overcoming barriers and exclusion in various aspects of life caused by illiteracy.
