The Rohini District Court in Delhi decided to treat a minor as an adult in a case involving the rape and murder of a 5-year-old girl, resulting in a life imprisonment sentence. The court mentioned that the convicted individual was above 16 years old at the time of the crime, which was initially reported in 2017.
The Special Judge (POCSO) Sushil Bala Dagar, while sentencing the child, imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 for murder and directed the District Legal Services Authority to provide a compensation of Rs 17 Lakh to the victim’s family. The court also noted the work history of the now-convicted individual as evidence of his capability to work during his incarceration.
The Special Public Prosecutor for the Delhi Police pushed for a life sentence, highlighting the seriousness of the crime and arguing that the accused’s actions reflect his mindset. He emphasised that the accused should receive the maximum punishment without the leniency provided by the Juvenile Justice Act of 2015.
