The Supreme Court has refused to ban the traditional bull race in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra. The Supreme Court has also upheld the constitutional validity of the amendment made by the Tamil Nadu government to the Central Cruelty to Animals Act.

In such a situation, now the traditional sport of bullock cart race in Maharashtra, Kambala in Karnataka and Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu will continue. In fact, the constitutional validity of the changes in the Cruelty to Animals Act was challenged in the Supreme Court but the court dismissed the petitions. Tamil Nadu had made this change in the law after a Supreme Court order in 2014, in which the court banned Jallikattu and other such sports.

“We are convinced that Jallikattu has been taking place in Tamil Nadu for the last one century. Does its inclusion in the cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu need to be discussed in more detail? “We cannot do this when the Assembly has declared that Jallikattu is the cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu, then we cannot have a different view on it. The assembly is the best place to decide on this.
