Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has informed his party executives that he will not be participating in the upcoming party leadership vote in September, according to local news reports.

This means Japan will soon have a new prime minister, as Kishida’s term as president of the Liberal Democratic Party expires in September. His decision to withdraw from the race comes as he faces declining support due to corruption scandals within the party.

The LDP, which controls both houses of parliament, will now need to elect a new leader who will succeed Kishida as prime minister. Kishida has taken steps to address the corruption issues, but his government’s support has continued to decline.
