Sex  ratio falls in Delhi and birth rate rises by 2022: report

 ‘Annual Report on  Birth  and  Death Registration  in Delhi, 2022′  shows that birth rate in Delhi increased to 14.24 per thousand population in 2022 from 13.13 in 2021.

 According to a report released by the Delhi government, the sex ratio in the national capital has dropped to 929 in 2022 from 932 a year ago. “Annual Report on Birth and Death Registration in Delhi, 2022” shows  that the birth rate in Delhi increased to 14.24 per thousand  population  in  2022 from 13.13 in 2021.  Mortality rate decreasing  to  6.07%  in 2022 from  8.28%.  in 2021.  It also  showed  a significant  increase  in the average number of births per day in  Delhi,  from 745 in 2021 to 823 in 2022. The  report said the  sex ratio  decreased  to 929 per thousand males in  2022,  from 932 in  2021.  

The report  stated that  1,55,670  (51.83%)  of the total  registered  births  were  male  and 1,44,581  (48.14%)  were  female  and 99  (0.03%) were in  the  “other”  category.  Of  the total births, 2,82,389  (94.02%) took place in  institutional  settings –  1,86,905  (66.19%)  in  public  hospitals  –  and 17,961  (5.98%) took place at home . 

The report said the  majority of births  (89.15%) took place  in urban  areas,  while births in rural areas accounted for  10.85%.  An analysis of  the age  of mothers at the time of  giving birth  showed that  37.52%  were  between  the  ages of 25 and 29,  while  30.55%  were  between  the  ages of 20 and 24,  the report  said. Furthermore,  in  29.71% of  cases, the  mother’s  age  was  over  29  years old.  The report  found  that  2.23% of  women  gave birth  when they were 19 years  old  or younger.  In the case of  home  births,  the  majority of births  (60.62%) took place  with the  help  of relatives  or others,  while only  13% of births took place with the presence of  a  caregiver, qualified  doctor, nurse or  midwife. According to the report, 25.58% of  births  took place in the presence of  an untrained  midwife.  

The report also highlights  that maternal and  infant  mortality rates  will increase slightly by  2022.  In 2022, the  infant mortality rate  (per thousand live births)  is 23.82, compared to  23.60 in 2021. The maternal mortality rate (per thousand live births)  is  0.49 in 2022,  which is 0.44  higher  in 2021.  In 2022,  1, 28,106  deaths were  recorded  as  against  1,71,476 deaths recorded in 2021.  Cases Recorded  deaths included 79,052  (61.71%) men  and 49,004  (38.25%) women,  and 50  (0.04%)  deaths  were  in  the  “other” category. 

According to the release, the  majority  (39%)  of  those who died  were  65  years of age or older,  while 7,155 infants died  during  the  year. It was shown that a  significant  proportion  (29.59) of deaths  involved  the  age  group 45 to 54. Leading  causes of institutional deaths in 2022  according to  ICD 10 (International Classification of Diseases-10th Revision)  reflects  that  14.85% of  cases  are  due to  sepsis (bacterial blood poisoning), 11.51% are  due to diseases of  the  pulmonary circulation and other forms  .  of heart  disease, 7.64%  due to shock,  4.43%  due to  liver disease, 4.33%  due to tuberculosis and  1.59%  due to COVID-19,  he  added.
