A decision of the Manipur High Court has increased tension in the state. In view of the violence that erupted, the Army was deployed in Manipur. People are being shifted to safer places and efforts are being made to maintain law and order.
The Manipur High Court had on April 19 ruled that the government should consider including the Maiti community in the tribal category. The High Court gave four weeks time to the state government for this.
In Manipur, this decision of the High Court is being opposed. Violence has erupted in Bishnupur and Chandrachudpur districts of Manipur in protest against the verdict. To prevent violence, the government has suspended mobile internet services for 5 days across the state. Curfew has also been imposed in Chandrachurpur district.
Here, on Wednesday, various student organizations took out a march under the banner of All Tribal Students Union to protest against the High Court’s decision. The protesters are opposing the grant of tribal status to the Maiti community.
What is the controversy?
In fact, about 60 percent of the Maiti community lives in Manipur. The Maiti community in Manipur is settled in and around the Imphal Valley. The Maiti community has been demanding that they are facing problems due to illegal infiltrators from Myanmar and Bangladesh. According to the existing law, they are not allowed to settle in the hilly areas of the state. This is the reason why the Maiti community has filed a petition in the High Court seeking their inclusion in the tribal category.
Why are the tribals protesting?
At the same time, the people of the tribal class of the state are opposing the high court’s decision. The tribal community fears that if the Maiti community is included in the tribal category, they will take over their land and resources
