An alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), Dr. Krishna Chivukula (MTech, 1970), has made the largest-ever donation of Rs. 228 crore to the institution. In recognition of this generous contribution, IIT Madras has named an academic block after him called the ‘Krishna Chivukula Block’. A special event was held on August 6 to make this announcement.

Dr. Krishna Chivukula is a successful entrepreneur with expertise in Chemistry, Engineering, and Material Science. He introduced Metal Injection Molding (MIM) technology to India in 1997 when it was still new in the USA.

This donation is among the largest ever received by an educational institution in India, and Dr. Chivukula was awarded the ‘Distinguished Alumnus Award’ by IIT Madras in 2015.

Dr. Krishna Chivukula graduated with Honours in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Bombay in 1968, completed his M.Tech. in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Madras in 1970, and obtained an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1980.

His career highlights include being the first Indian to serve as the Group President and Chief Executive Officer of a major conglomerate in the USA at the age of 37. Currently, he owns and chairs the Board of Directors of several companies in India and the USA.

The donation will be used for various purposes, such as supporting international students through scholarships, Research Excellence Grant Program, UG Fellowship Program for incoming students, Sports Scholar Program, Shaastra Magazine development, and maintenance of the Krishna Chivukula Block, according to IIT Madras.
