Google Rolls Back AI Satellite Image Generator After Deepfake Concerns

Published on

Google has temporarily disabled its newly introduced AI-powered satellite image generation feature in Google Earth after widespread concerns that the tool could be used to create convincing fake satellite imagery and spread misinformation.

The feature, announced on July 30, allowed users to generate custom satellite-style images by simply selecting a location in Google Earth and describing what they wanted to see using text prompts. Within a day of its release, security researchers, journalists, and open-source intelligence (OSINT) experts raised alarms over its potential misuse.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Google confirmed it was removing the feature while additional safeguards are developed.

“We’ve seen geospatial professionals using this feature for valuable purposes. However, we’ve also seen generated imagery being shared in ways that may violate our policies. We’re rolling back the feature while we implement stronger guardrails.”

AI-Generated Satellite Images Spark Misinformation Fears

Experts warned that realistic AI-generated satellite imagery could make it significantly easier to create fake evidence of wars, natural disasters, military operations, or other major events.

Open-source researcher Henk van Ess tested the tool by requesting images of several fictional scenarios, including refugee camps, bombed hospitals, and military sites. According to him, the AI generated many of these images without rejecting the prompts.

Independent testing also demonstrated that the tool could create fabricated scenes such as:

  • Fires covering Iran’s strategic Kharg Island.
  • Major flooding surrounding the U.S. Capitol.
  • Other realistic-looking disaster scenarios that never occurred.

If shared online without proper context, such images could easily mislead the public.

Why Satellite Images Matter

Satellite imagery has become one of the most trusted resources for journalists, investigators, humanitarian organizations, and OSINT researchers.

These images are frequently used to:

  • Verify breaking news.
  • Investigate conflict zones.
  • Confirm military movements.
  • Analyze natural disasters.
  • Fact-check images circulating on social media.

Because satellite imagery has traditionally come from trusted commercial or government satellites, it has generally been considered difficult to manipulate convincingly.

Experts Raise Security Concerns

Researchers warn that integrating AI-generated imagery directly into a trusted mapping platform like Google Earth could blur the line between authentic and synthetic satellite data.

Jake Godin, a senior researcher at Bellingcat, noted that fake satellite images have appeared before, but creating them previously required multiple tools and significant effort. Integrating AI generation directly into Google Earth dramatically lowers that barrier.

Experts also worry that governments or organizations could dismiss genuine satellite evidence as AI-generated, further eroding public trust.

Google’s Response

Google stated that AI-generated images include its SynthID watermark and that the company blocks image generation involving certain harmful topics while continuously improving safety protections.

Despite these measures, many researchers argued that watermarking alone is insufficient because screenshots or edited versions of AI-generated images can still circulate widely online.

The Bigger Picture

The incident highlights the growing challenge of balancing powerful AI creativity with information integrity. As AI-generated content becomes increasingly realistic, platforms face mounting pressure to prevent misuse while maintaining public trust.

Google has not announced when—or if—the AI satellite image generation feature will return to Google Earth.
