The inaugural session of the 18th Lok Sabha will kick off today with the swearing-in of Members of Parliament, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This session follows the recent general elections where the NDA secured 293 seats, INDIA alliance secured 234 seats, and Congress held 99 seats.

Bharatiya Janata Party lawmaker Bhartruhari Mahtab will be appointed as the pro-tem Speaker by President Droupadi Murmu. Subsequently, Mahtab will invite Prime Minister Modi, as the Leader of the Lok Sabha, to take the oath as a member.

Before the Parliament session begins, the newly-elected Congress MPs will meet at the CPP office in Parliament at 10 am. The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha will run from June 24 to July 3 for the oath/affirmation of new Members, while the 264th Session of Rajya Sabha will also take place from June 27 to July 3.

The election for the new Lok Sabha Speaker is set for June 26. President Murmu will address a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament on June 27. Additionally, she has named a team to assist the Speaker Protem in administering the oath to newly-elected members.

Key topics likely to be discussed in the first session include the election of the Speaker, allegations of paper leaks in NEET-UG and UGC-NET exams, and the appointment of the pro-tem Speaker. The issue of alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG exam is expected to be a significant point of contention, with the Opposition criticising the government over the purported paper leak and subsequent exam cancellations.
