Delhi Capitals (DC) have removed Ricky Ponting from his role as head coach before IPL 2025. The franchise announced this on X, marking the end of Ponting’s seven-year tenure that began before IPL 2018. Under Ponting, DC reached their first-ever IPL final in 2020 and topped the points table in IPL 2021, but lost both qualifiers and missed the final. Despite Shreyas Iyer’s return from injury, DC retained Rishabh Pant as captain during IPL 2021. DC has not made the playoffs since 2021, though they ended a seven-year playoff drought in 2019 under Iyer, who led the team from 2018 to 2020 after Gautam Gambhir stepped down.
Ponting, a two-time IPL-winning coach with Mumbai Indians (MI), may continue in the IPL with another team. Sourav Ganguly is expected to replace him at DC. Ganguly, who returned to DC before IPL 2023, confirmed Ponting’s departure and expressed his ambition to win the IPL with DC. Ganguly, who first joined DC as an advisor in 2019 and later served as BCCI president, will take over as head coach.
