Congress MP from Jalandhar Chaudhary Santokh Singh died on Saturday during former Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra in Punjab. He had a heart attack. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Phagwara where doctors declared him brought dead.
In fact, the Bharat Jodo Yatra was going towards Phagwara from Ladowal toll plaza in Ludhiana on Saturday morning. Santokh, a 76-year-old Congress MP, was walking at some distance from Rahul Gandhi. During this time, after walking 300 meters, he got an attack at 8.25 am. They stopped and sat there. People in the vicinity took him to the hospital in an ambulance. He died about 20 minutes later at 8.45 pm on the way.
After sending the Congress MP in an ambulance, Rahul Gandhi took the Bharat Jodo Yatra to Bhattian in Phillaur. After this, as soon as the news of his demise was received, the journey was stopped. After some time, Rahul Gandhi left for the hospital along with some Congress leaders in a car.
Congress MP Santokh Singh started his political journey as a Punjab Youth Congress leader in 1978. From 1978 to 1982, he was the senior vice-president of the Punjab Youth Congress. From 1987 to 1995, he became the President of District Congress Committee Rural. After registering his first victory in 1992, he was elected as the General Secretary of the Punjab Congress Legislature Party. From 1992 to 1995, he became the Chief Parliamentary Secretary in-charge of Rural Development and Panchayats, Parliamentary Affairs and Power Department. He was also the Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Food and Civil Supplies, Cabinet Minister in the Punjab government.
