Community leader and social impact advocate Moses Vedamuthu has been awarded the City of Parramatta’s Citizen of the Year, recognising his leadership in building support systems for vulnerable communities across Western Sydney.

The honour was presented during the City of Parramatta’s Australia Day celebrations at Parramatta Town Hall, where individuals who demonstrate exceptional service and commitment to the community are recognised.

Vedamuthu is the founder of SOHAS Charity (Support Organisation for Homeless and Asylum Seekers), an organisation dedicated to supporting people experiencing hardship. Through his leadership, SOHAS has grown into a grassroots initiative that delivers practical assistance and long-term support to individuals and families facing difficult circumstances.

Over the past six years, the organisation has provided weekly food and grocery support to elders, people experiencing homelessness, refugees, survivors of domestic violence, single parents and international students across six local government areas, including Parramatta. The charity has recently expanded its outreach to the Hunter Region, further extending its community impact.

Beyond providing immediate relief, Vedamuthu has focused on helping people rebuild their lives through education and employment pathways. Under his leadership, SOHAS has facilitated free Diploma opportunities for more than 30 students, while migrants and refugees have been supported with resume development, training and job readiness programs. These initiatives have already helped 28 individuals secure employment.

SOHAS has also been active in addressing homelessness. During National Homelessness Week, the organisation distributed over 100 blankets and sleeping bags to individuals sleeping rough, providing essential support during the winter months.

Reflecting on the recognition, Vedamuthu said the award reinforces the importance of community responsibility and compassion.

“This honour fills me with pride and purpose,” he said. “I believe being a good citizen means taking responsibility for the wellbeing of our community. Even small actions can create meaningful change in the lives of people who need support.”

Looking ahead, Vedamuthu hopes to establish a SOHAS Community Hub, which will provide free IT and digital training opportunities for First Nations students, helping create pathways to education, skills development and empowerment.

Vedamuthu’s work has previously been recognised with several honours, including the NSW Volunteer Team of the Year Award and the Australia Day Community Group Award, reflecting the growing impact of his leadership and vision.

The City of Parramatta Citizen of the Year Award recognises individuals whose dedication strengthens the community and inspires positive change — a commitment that Vedamuthu continues to demonstrate through his work.
