Bike taxi service company Rapido has received a big setback from the Bombay High Court. The High Court has ordered Rapido to stop all its services in Pune immediately. The court said that along with bike taxis, the company’s rickshaws, delivery services are also without license, they should be stopped from immediate service.
During the hearing regarding the Rapido taxi service, the Bombay High Court has directed the company to stop all services from 1 pm on Friday. Following the High Court order, the company Rapido has agreed to stop all services in the entire state by January 20. The next hearing in the case will be on Friday.
What is the case?
In fact, Rapido had applied for a license in pune RTO on March 16, 2022, which was rejected by the transport department. Along with this, the Transport Department also appealed to the people not to use The Rapido app and its services. After this, Rapido approached the Bombay High Court. On November 29, 2022, the high court had asked the department to reconsider the permission. After this, it was rejected again in the RTO meeting on 21 December 2022. It said that there is no clear rule regarding bike taxis in the state.
In such a situation, after the application was rejected again, Rapido filed a petition in the High Court. During the hearing, the state government told the high court that it has formed an independent committee on ‘bike taxis’. The committee will soon submit its report in this regard. Till then, the state government demands immediate closure of this service. After this, the High Court issued an order to the company to stop the services.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Bombay High Court had reprimanded the Maharashtra government for the uncertainty in formulating a policy allowing bike taxis, saying it will have to clarify its stand in some form or the other.
