Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday criticized Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over his remarks linking educated women with the birth rate in his state.
Speaking in the state of Madhya Pradesh, where elections are being held, Mr. Modi also criticized India’s opposition bloc leaders for not speaking out against Mr. Kumar’s statement.
“Errors and platitudes”
“TV viewers are sure to notice an event. A senior leader of the INDI union, carrying the union flag and playing various games to overthrow the present central government, made such vulgar statements in a language that no one can imagine, at the conference where mothers and sisters are present,” he said. Mr Modi at a rally in Guna.

Modi was referring to Kumar’s remarks on birth control in the Bihar Assembly on Tuesday. “Husbands’ behavior leads to more children. But with education, women know how to control themselves. That’s why the number [of births] is decreasing. Previously [the birth rate] was 4.3, but now it has risen to 2.9. “We will reach No. 2 soon,” Mr. Kumar said. These statements sparked sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which described them as “misogynistic, vulgar, sexist and patriarchal,” prompting Kumar to apologize on Wednesday.

“No INDI leader is ready to speak out against such an insult to mothers and sisters,” Modi said.
“Do people who have such views on women help you? Can they protect your honor, can they respect you? the Prime Minister asked the women in the crowd. “How low will you stoop? He added: “You are making the country the most humiliating in the world.”
The Prime Minister is on an election visit to Madhya Pradesh, where voting will take place in less than ten days.
