New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday partially reversed a trial court’s verdict acquitting the accused of rioting at Jamia Millia Islamia. The Delhi High Court has re-named nine of the 11 acquitted in the case as accused. They are Safoora Zargar, Sharjeel Imam, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Mohammad Qasim, Mahmood Anwar, Shajar Raza, Umair Ahmed, Mohammad Bilal Nadeem and Chanda Yadav.

In fact, in the violence in December 2019, the Delhi Police had accused 11 people. They were booked for violence, unlawful assembly, blocking of public servants and various other sections. But the trial court had acquitted all the 11 people in the violence case on February 4. Against this, the Delhi Police filed a petition in the High Court.

Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma said, “Freedom of expression does not deter anyone, but this court is aware of its responsibility and the court has tried to give a verdict in the case keeping this in mind.” The right to meet peacefully can also be restricted. The court does not defend damage to property and breach of peace. ‘

Let us tell you that in December 2019, some students and locals of Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University started protests against CAA and National Register of Citizens NRC. The protesters announced that they would take out a rally to Parliament. However, these protests soon turned violent. Police used force to stop them. Following this, some of the protesting students allegedly entered the university. After this, violence broke out in Jamia University and its surrounding areas. The Delhi Police had named 12 people as accused in the case. These people were booked under several sections of the IPC, including rioting and unlawful assembly.
