New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday ordered that the notice for the first meeting of the Delhi Municipal Corporation be issued within 24 hours. In the order, the Supreme Court also said that the election of the mayor will be held in the first meeting of the corporation. Nominated members will not be allowed to vote. Apart from this, after the mayor is selected, the deputy mayor and members of the standing committee will be elected under his chairmanship.

The Aam Aadmi Party is calling this order of the court as its victory. The Delhi Chief Minister tweeted, “Supreme Court order is a victory of democracy. Thank you very much to the Supreme Court. After two and a half months, Delhi will now get a mayor. It has been proved that lg and BJP together are passing illegal and unconstitutional orders in Delhi.

Aap leader Dr Shaili Oberoi had filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Lieutenant Governor’s decision to allow nominated members to vote in the mayoral election. On Friday, both the major demands of the AAP party were accepted in the Supreme Court.

The apex court had on February 8 sought responses from the Lieutenant Governor’s office, the temporary presiding officer of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and others on Oberoi’s plea. The petitioner’s counsel had said that elections to mayor, deputy mayor and standing committee members cannot be held simultaneously. style
