Ranchi: Jain monk Subnyasagar Maharaj, who was protesting against the conversion of Jain pilgrimage summit in Jharkhand to a tourist spot, died on Tuesday. They were on hunger strike for the last 10 days against the Jharkhand government’s decision. Sugnyasagar was 72 years old.

Acharya Subnyasagar had been fasting in Sanganer since December 25 following the Jharkhand government’s decision. On Tuesday morning, his Dol Yatra was taken out from Sanganer Sanghiji Temple. During this time, a large number of people of Jain society including Acharya Sunil Sagar were present. Jain Muni was buried at Sanganer in Jaipur. Muni Sugnyasagar was born in Bilada village of Jodhpur, but his workplace remained dark in Mumbai. He took initiation from Acharya Sunil Sagar in Girnar, Muni Diksha in Banswara and Minor Initiation at Sammed Shikhar. Muni observed the fast from the beginning and finally kept a fast to save the shrine and eventually gave up his life. The saint’s house name was Nemiraj.

Actually, the Jharkhand government has declared Parasnath Hill of Giridih district as a tourist place. People of Jain society are protesting against this across the country. Parasnath Hill is famous as the highest pilgrimage summit among the people of Jainism all over the world. The Jain community fears that after the summit becomes a tourist destination, meat and liquor will be sold here, this is against the sentiment and belief of the society.

Let us tell you that this place, considered to be the Himalayas of Jharkhand, is located at the sacred pilgrimage shikharji of Jains. In this holy area, 20 out of 24 Tirthankaras of Jainism attained salvation. Lord Parshvanath, the 23rd Tirthankara, also attained Nirvana on this hill. Devotees go to the summit of the holy mountain on foot or by doli. After this, they travel 9 kilometers through the inaccessible paths of forests, mountains and reach the summit. The Jain community demands that the government declare the entire parikrama area and its 5-km radius as a holy site, so that its sanctity is maintained.
