What began as a professional certification learning initiative has grown into a community of 2,000+ professionals across more than 40 countries. The Academy of Internal Audit (AIA) has evolved over the years to support the preparation of professionals for internationally recognised certifications, and is now beginning to create a broader learning environment for professionals in the audit, fraud, risk, compliance and related industries.
The growth reflects a simple reality: professionals can start their education from a point of certification preparation but have to develop as they go. They require clarity, guidance from experts, and a means of applying their learning to their jobs.
From Certification Preparation to Professional Learning
Professional certifications have remained at the centre of AIA’s mission. Its learning portfolio includes Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) and, more recently, Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA). The certifications can be a valuable component of an audit, fraud, compliance, risk, and financial crime professional’s career path. The preparation of them and maintaining a full-time working career is not always easy.
This has influenced how AIA has developed its approach to learning for professional certification over time. Instead of just providing study material, the emphasis has been on developing a more structured learning process around the study material.
AIA’s approach combines expert-led learning, personalised guidance and structured preparation, supported by concise, expert-curated resources designed to make complex subjects easier to navigate. It’s a crucial difference. A significant number of study aids does not automatically provide a professional with clues as to what to read, how to tackle a challenging topic, or where to place a specific thought in the context of the whole book.
Learning With Context, Not Just Content.
AIA’s way combines expert-led sessions, personalised support and structured preparation and concise resources to help professionals focus on what matters. The learning process enables them to get help from other people when they need it, ask questions when they don’t understand, and gradually work through each problem.
The guiding function seems to be more about making sense of what they are already learning for AIA than articulating what they should learn. It is particularly relevant if the preparation for certification has to be squeezed around an existing career.
Talking about this approach, Puneet Garg, CEO and Faculty at the Academy of Internal Audit, stated, “We have never looked at certification preparation as simply helping someone get through an examination. Professionals come to us with different levels of experience, different challenges and different goals. Our role is to make the learning journey clearer and more structured, while giving professionals the guidance they need to understand what they are learning and where it fits into their work. As our community has grown across countries, that focus has remained the same – supporting professionals not just through a certification, but through their wider professional learning journey.”
Different Countries – One Vision
AIA’s efforts have spread across markets and so has the professional community. Today, professionals from 40+ countries are part of the AIA ecosystem, bringing experiences shaped by different industries, organisations and working environments.
For AIA, this international presence reflects a broader view of professional development — one where knowledge should not remain limited to a single role, market or area of expertise. Professionals working in different markets may encounter different organisational environments, but many of the challenges across audit, risk, fraud and compliance are closely connected. Exposure to different professional perspectives can therefore add another layer to the learning experience.
For AIA, the international community is a new way of professional development – expanding professional development beyond a particular role, market or competency. To establish a professional setting where individuals can enhance their learning and gain experiences and insights outside their area of specialization.
Today, professionals from around the globe are participating in the system, and AIA is steadily developing a network beyond certification and creating a community of those who desire ongoing professional development.
From Learners to Leaders
The starting point remains structured preparation for recognised certifications, but for AIA, the relationship with professionals does not have to end once a certification is completed.
AIA’s approach is focused on maintaining a longer-term connection with the professionals it works with – supporting them as their roles, responsibilities, and industry expectations evolve. Through continued guidance and professional updates, AIA aims to help its community stay informed and connected with the evolution in related fields.
With 2,000+ professionals across 40+ countries and a reported 99.6% success rate, AIA’s growth reflects not only the reach of its professional learning approach, but also the relationships it has built with professionals across different markets and stages of their careers.
A Community That Continues to Grow
The development of this community points to a broader understanding of what professional learning can look like. Certification remains an important milestone, but the value of a professional learning community can extend beyond the examination through expert guidance, practical knowledge, new perspectives, and continued exposure to different areas of work.
AIA’s community is expanding and its efforts are no longer just about getting to more professionals. It is also about building the learning environment around them and providing additional opportunities to share knowledge and experiences across roles and markets.
Certification may be where the journey begins. A strong professional community is what can keep the learning going.
