London rejects last appeal to bring Nirav Modi back to India

Indian diamond merchant Nirav Modi’s last appeal against extradition to the UK has been rejected on Thursday. With this, the way has been cleared to bring Nirav Modi to India. Nirav Modi fled India in 2018 after his alleged involvement in a massive fraud at the Punjab National Bank was revealed.

London: Nirav Modi, wanted to stand trial in India on fraud and money laundering charges, has been denied permission by the London High Court to appeal against his extradition order in the UK Supreme Court. The accused has argued that there is a risk of suicide if he is extradited. However, nirav Modi’s appeal has been rejected in the High Court.

In a ruling delivered at the Royal Court of Justice in London, Lord Justice Jeremy Stuart-Smith and Justice Robert Jay said the appellant’s application for permission to appeal to the Supreme Court had been rejected. Nirav Modi is currently behind bars in London’s Wandsworth Prison. With the rejection of this appeal, the accused is now left with no legal option in the UK against extradition.

Last month, Nirav Modi filed an application before the UK High Court seeking permission to appeal against his extradition to India in the UK Supreme Court. The application came after an appeal against extradition on grounds of his mental health was dismissed. The court rejected the argument that the accused was at risk of suicide. Nirav Modi fled India after the Punjab National Bank scam was exposed.

Nirav Modi is the main accused in the Rs 13,000 crore PNB scam. Indian authorities have been trying to extradite Nirav Modi from the UK for a long time to face charges of fraud, money laundering, destruction of evidence and intimidation of witnesses. The CBI is probing the fraud on PNB through large-scale undertaking (LoUs) or loan agreements, while the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is probing the laundering of proceeds of that fraud.
