Is MOMACU Haryana’s Gangs of Wasseypur Moment?

Delhi: Indian entertainment is undergoing a structural shift.

For decades, cinema’s center of gravity remained concentrated in a handful of cities. Today, however, the rise of OTT platforms, digital distribution, and audience demand for authentic storytelling has created a new reality: regional stories are becoming national conversations.

Against this backdrop arrives MOMACU: Motor Machis Aur Cutter, a KableOne Original premiering on June 4, a film that many industry observers believe could become a watershed moment for Haryana’s emerging cinema ecosystem.

Written and directed by Kuldeep Kunal, the film is presented by KableOne and Saga Studios in association with Art Beat House & Harry Bhatti Films, . Produced by Satender Satya Sehrawat,Sumeet Singh and Harry Bhatti, the project brings together a compelling ensemble featuring Jatin Sarna, Apoorva Arora, Gourav Sharma, Yashpal Sharma, Tushar Dutt, Shrikant Verma, Mukesh Musafir, Sonu Ronjhiya, Amarjeet Singh, Baljinder Kaur.
The film’s casting, which is commendable, has been done by Goutam Sharma and Gulshan Suryavanshi.

The cast alone signals ambition.

Jatin Sarna remains synonymous with Sacred Games, arguably India’s most influential OTT success story. Apoorva Arora’s work in College Romance established her as one of the most recognizable faces in India’s digital entertainment landscape. Gourav Sharma’s performances in Guns & Gulaabs and Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui have further strengthened his reputation as a versatile performer.

Yet what makes MOMACU particularly noteworthy is not its cast.

It is its conviction.

The film embraces its geography, language, characters, and cultural identity without compromise. In doing so, it evokes comparisons with films such as Gangs of Wasseypur, which transformed deeply local narratives into nationally celebrated cinema.

Much like Anurag Kashyap’s landmark gangster saga redefined how audiences viewed small-town India, MOMACU appears determined to tell a story that is unapologetically rooted in Haryana while remaining universally engaging.

Early reactions suggest it succeeds.

Industry veteran Sujish Jangra, who attended a special screening, described the film as “gripping, immersive, and relentlessly engaging.”

According to Jangra, the film combines authenticity, tension, humor, and emotional depth in a manner rarely seen in regional productions.

“It doesn’t feel like a film trying to imitate mainstream cinema. It feels like a film confident in its own identity. That confidence is what makes it powerful,” he remarked.

The timing could not be more significant.

Haryana’s entertainment economy has grown dramatically over the last decade. Haryanvi music today commands billions of annual digital views and has created some of the country’s most influential regional creators. Cinema, however, remains the next frontier.

As audiences increasingly seek culturally resonant stories over formulaic narratives, Haryana possesses a unique opportunity to transform its storytelling heritage into a thriving film ecosystem.

MOMACU may well become an important catalyst in that journey.

Whether the film ultimately becomes a commercial success remains to be seen. But its larger significance is already evident.

It demonstrates that Haryana possesses the creative talent, production capability, and storytelling ambition necessary to participate meaningfully in India’s next entertainment wave.

For years, regional cinema looked toward Bollywood for validation.

Films like MOMACU suggest that the future may be different.

The next great Indian cinematic movement may not emerge from established production hubs.

It may emerge from storytellers willing to embrace their roots.

And if early indications are any measure, MOMACU: Motor Machis Aur Cutter could be remembered as the film that announced Haryana’s arrival on India’s cinematic map. For more information you can visit Instagram
