Banks Open Nationwide Today on Third Saturday, Except Assam Observes Kati Bihu Holiday

Published on

As per the RBI’s official bank holiday calendar, banks are closed on all Sundays, as well as the second and fourth Saturdays each month. The first, third, and fifth Saturdays are regular working days for both public and private sector banks. Hence, October 18 being the third Saturday, banking services are functioning as usual in all Indian states and union territories, except for branches in Assam where a regional holiday is being observed.

In Assam, bank branches have declared a full closure on account of Kati Bihu, also known as Kongali Bihu, one of the three major Bihu festivals in the state. This celebration signifies the start of a new agricultural cycle, during which lamps are lit in fields as a prayer for good harvests. Therefore, customers in cities including Guwahati and Tinsukia may experience unavailability of over-the-counter services today.

Bank are closed in ASSAM but people use online transaction

While physical branches remain closed in parts of Assam, all digital banking channels — including mobile apps, internet banking, ATMs, and UPI payments — continue to function normally. Customers can perform fund transfers, pay bills, or check balances online without any interruptions.

The Reserve Bank of India ensures that core financial services remain available through these digital platforms, minimizing customer inconvenience during regional or festival-specific holidays. People planning any offline transactions in the coming days are advised to schedule them according to their local holiday calendar.

Looking Ahead

As India moves into the festive week, the coming days will feature multiple region-specific bank holidays linked to Diwali celebrations. Customers are reminded to plan financial transactions early, especially for loan repayments, cheque settlements, and in-person banking.

Regular operations will continue nationwide until Monday, October 20, when numerous states will observe Diwali-related holidays. The next uniform nationwide bank off day will occur on Saturday, October 25, marking the fourth Saturday of October.
