6 killed, internet services suspended in firing and violence along Assam-Meghalaya border

Six people have been killed in the violence that broke out after the firing incident on the Assam-Meghalaya border on Tuesday morning. Police had stopped a truck smuggling timber which led to a clash and six people, including a forest guard, were killed. Following the incident, the Meghalaya government has suspended mobile internet services in seven districts for the next 48 hours.

Internet has been suspended in West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, Eastern West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills. The truck was intercepted by an Assam Forest Department team at Moikrang in West Karbi Anglong district on the Meghalaya border around 3 am. The truck driver tried to escape after which Forrest Gord had followed him. After this, there are reports of a clash.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has said that a total of six people, including five from Meghalaya and one from Assam, were killed in the incident. The injured have been rushed to the hospital. An FIR has been registered by the Meghalaya Police and an investigation has been initiated.

According to media reports, a large number of people from Meghalaya, armed with daggers and other weapons, had gathered at the spot around 5 am. On reaching the spot, the police team had to fire in defense, killing six people, including Forrest Guard. The deceased forest guard has been identified as Bidya Singh Lehte, while another forest guard Abhimanyu was injured in the incident.

Police are trying to maintain peace and control the situation.
