Over the past five years, meal prices increased by 71%, whereas salaries only grew by 31%

Over the past five years, the cost of a homemade vegetarian thali in Maharashtra rose by 71%, outpacing the 37% increase in the average monthly salary earned through regular employment. Although casual laborers saw their wages rise by 67% during this time, they were already allocating a significant portion of their income towards food expenses. 

It is important to highlight that for the purpose of this study, it was assumed that an average Indian family could fulfill their daily dietary requirements by consuming two thalis each day, encompassing breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
