Travelers are flocking to airport lounges for complimentary food, drinks, comfortable seating, and charging outlets. However, with a surge in the number of passengers with debit and credit cards offering lounge access, the lounges have become overcrowded.

Initially meant for business travelers seeking a quiet and productive environment, lounges have now turned into spaces for anyone with a card, leading to operational challenges for airports and credit card companies.

These companies pay lounges a fee for each cardholder entering, with the hope that they will make additional purchases. To boost credit card penetration, lounge access was offered as a perk, but now many operators are devaluing this offering by imposing minimum spending requirements and visit caps.

As a result, solo travelers are now often found in food courts working on laptops, reflecting a shift from the lounge’s original target demographic of business travelers.
