89% Growing Himalayan Glacial Lakes Expanded More Than Twice in 38 Years: ISRO

Published on

According to a report released today by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), at least 89% of the 2,431 glacial lakes in the Himalayas that were discovered between 2016 and 2017 have significantly increased in size since 1984.

The ISRO analysis’s findings are concerning because, according to experts, warming-related glacier lake expansion could have a domino effect in the lower regions. According to ISRO, satellite data archives covering the previous three to four decades offer important insights into changes taking place in glaciated areas.
