Approximately 50 Indian citizens serving in the Russian military have asked for discharge and are in contact with Indian authorities for repatriation, the Ministry of External Affairs reported.
There are about 100 Indians aiding the Russian army in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The MEA assured that the Indian nationals will return home soon, as both New Delhi and Moscow are collaborating on their repatriation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed this issue with President Vladimir Putin, and efforts are underway to bring back the Indians.
The majority of Indians are employed as support staff and have faced casualties on the Ukrainian frontlines. India has requested a halt to the recruitment of its citizens in the Russian military, and some individuals have already returned home.
Earlier this year, videos circulated on social media showed Indian nationals seeking discharge from the Russian army while serving in Ukraine. Alongside Indians, individuals from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka have also been recruited by the Russian military.
